Dr. George

Q: Why do testicles smell bad occasionally?

A: First of all, take a look down there. Does it surprise you that anything that looks that nasty sometimes smells bad? Just kidding of course. Most men are rather fond of their genitalia…

Any part of our body that has folds, orifices, or crevices that lead to skin being warm, dark, and sweaty is a set up for fungal overgrowth. That would include armpits, vaginas, butt cheek clefts, deep fat folds, and under heavy breasts. All of these areas spend the majority of the time in a state that could be called "fungal nirvana". In other words, fungi reproduce quickly with a subsequent musty odor.

A second reason that some men have an unpleasant odor about their genitalia is the presence of apocrine sweat glands after puberty. These glands are concentrated in the armpits and groin, and become active upon sexual maturation. Apocrine glands secrete a substance that is broken down by bacteria leading to a musty smell.

Both of these phenomena need not cause any problem with daily shower or bath, and simply washing with soap. Along with a change of underwear daily, physiological body odors like these should not be noticeable unless one's nose is very close. If you're real concerned, use a little talcum powder or baby powder. Many men and women actually find those odors stimulate them sexually. Whatever…
