WHEATON, Ill. (AP) _ A 25-year-old Lisle man who was videotaped shooting to death two rival gang members has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Richard Huerta pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Wednesday. The case against him had been pending for almost seven years while he was treated for cancer. Assistant State's Attorney Paul Marchese told Judge Robert Anderson the disease was in remission.
Huerta was 18 on June 17, 2001, when he and other members of his confronted rival gang members at a West Chicago apartment complex.
A video recording, shot by an apartment resident from an upper floor, shows a stick-wielding group chasing Huerta and the others. The tape shows the group running away as Huerta appears with .38-caliber handgun, firing it five times.
Fatally shot in the back were 24-year-old Jose Tamayo and 29-year-old Pedro Reyes.
