Thursday, July 1st. He marked his first day on the job by taking questions from the press at his UIC office. He gave a brief statement regarding being honored to start his term on Founder's Day, the day that the University of Illinois became operational.

On June 24th, the Chicago city council voted to allow Walmart to set up shop within the city. Mayor Daley, in negotiations between the company and the unions, reached a deal where Walmart agreed to a starting pay of $8.75 with no benefits, and the council accepted this as a reasonable compromise during a time when city budgets are flimsy, unsustainable, and in serious danger of facing massive cuts.
