It's about that time again. After a week of school, you need a break. Better yet, you need a recess. And UIC's USG delivers on this very need. The biannual, Recess will be held in the quad Tuesday, September 5 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Returning students are most likely beaming as they read this good news. But if you are a freshman you may not understand, so let me explain it to you. This recess is like no other you've ever experienced. It includes free fun, free food, and free gifts. 'Free' will be your favorite word in college, so be on the lookout for it.

The activities include henna artists, caricaturists, and even magician performances; the last bit is a new feature of recess so check it out. The fun includes a triple play mini-cage which combines three sports in one, a two way gladiator joust, bouncy boxing, and even bungy jumping. The food range has also expanded this year to include delicacies from Dominos and Pompei, as well as from Quiznos and Jimmy Johns. Jamba Juice will be featuring drinks in addition to the $600 worth of bottled drinks that USG has purchased. USG will also be giving away gift certificates to the WOW Wingery, one laptop, and three Dell printers.

"This year's Recess is going to be the best ever," assured 21 year old USG President Edgar Stern, a biological sciences major who plans to attend medical school and law school. The USG spent more money on this recess that any previous recess by more than $1,000.

Recess is the USG's biggest event of the year. This Tuesday's celebration has been in the making since last May. In the past, the president has worked on the event with the USG trustees alone. But Stern had some great help this year. He said that Vice President Faizan Shakeel "helped a ton" and Jennifer Moy "has been an angel." Student trustee Umair Mamsa was also an asset in the planning process.

The nature of USG is changing, said Stern. Previously it was competitive to get in; there was a lot of red tape to get through for only one or two spots. Stern came to office and changed the bureaucratic nature of the office. He worked to open up seven spots in the general assembly, and to make the process a bit quicker, and more efficient.

Stern's major initiative was to have the students represented better. His team worked hard for the changes.

There are new faces in the USG and he is "committed to getting things done". Stern and company have been working actively to better relations with the administration and personnel.

One of his initiatives includes getting a music-downloading program for students with more than 1.7 million songs. If you want to know more about USG, pay him a visit in his office; he said "come talk to me".

Volunteers for Recess will begin setting up for the event at 8 a.m. Anybody can show up and volunteer. You'll get a free t-shirt if you do. If it rains on Tuesday don't fret. The event will be moved to September 12 on the off-chance that it rains. As a follow-up to the fun, Stern mentioned that Robert Sulty's organization Prophile will feature bands in the quad on September 7. So, get ready to play!
