Located at 2120 N. Halsted in Lincoln Park, Betsey Johnson's boutique is known for creating timeless pieces with a flash of funk.
As cold weather subsides, the perfect time to rearrange your closet and start wearing your spring fashions has arrived.
This season's trends are all about wild prints, bold colors, light fabrics, florals and futurism. While the futurism trend may seem impractical for many students' liking, the other trends can be worn devoid of apprehension.
If you plan on traveling to the Lincoln Park area, the Betsey Johnson boutique is one women's wear shopping destination featuring a culmination of these trends.
Betsey Johnson's influence can be traced back 16 years to her first Chicago location at 72 E. Oak St. Four years since their relocation to 2120 N. Halsted, Lincoln Park has gained a noteworthy addition to their high fashion roster.
When entering the boutique, one is taken back by the black and white checkered floor reminiscent of '60s diners and framed sketches of past collections. A super-sized cushion complements the center of the store and becomes useful when a customer needs time to sit and ponder over the vast selection of colorful dresses, razzle and dazzle accessories, funky tops and flashy jewelry.
Because many of the items are attention-grabbing and dissimilar from what one may normally find in a department store, any girl in need of something unique has many options. Betsey's clothing style ranges from something you can wear to class to a special event gown.
As a college student, pricing probably will determine whether you will buy or fly, and while Betsey's prices do tend to be affordable compared to other high fashion designers, prices start around $150 per item. So, this location may be best suited for purchasing those timeless, basic pieces you would wear for years to come.
If you can't afford a simple polka dot dress now, do not fret, new items come in weekly and there's always a sales rack for the price conscious shoppers.
"Many of Betsey's pieces are classics that never go out of style because Betsey doesn't follow trends, but sets them. A lot of our clients do become lifelong customers. Some people come in with items from 10 years ago, but the clothing still has its appeal. Overall, our clientele range from teenagers to mature women," said store manager Michele Passmann.
Individuality is the focus in each Betsey Johnson fashion show and the month of March saw many jersey dresses with ruffles and embroideries in a black and white color palette. Keep in mind, too, that a new collection emerges every month.
"It's feminine, fun, and you don't have to be a specific type to enjoy the clothing and wear it," said Passmann.
If you're trying to give your wardrobe a wake up call, the Betsey Johnson boutique is the perfect destination. It's unlikely you will leave empty handed and you will be well conditioned to vaunt the new trends.
Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
