Students kick back with a movie and a needle

With reports that depleted hospital blood banks house less blood than a hospital demands in a single day, the University of Illinois Medical Center is constantly coming up with new ways to bring in donors. Last week: a blood drive-in movie.

Students donating blood on Wednesday or Thursday of the first week of school were treated to "Bram Stoker's Dracula." With a small TV set-up in front of each donor station, the experience, though gimmicky, became a little more enjoyable.

Co-sponsored by the University of Illinois Medical Center-Blood Bank, Campus Programs and Greek Life at UIC, the blood drive was the first of many to come this semester.

Each donor is responsible for replenishing the diminishing stock of blood with one pint. With a single heart transplant requiring 50 pints of blood, every donation counts.

Patients use between five and 10 platelet units per day at the UI Medical Center. The component of whole blood responsible for controlling bleeding-platelets-are necessary, not only for trauma victims, but also for cancer patients, transplant recipients, patients undergoing open heart surgery, anemic patients and many other persons with blood-related disorders. Accordingly, each of these patients requires regular platelet transfusions.

The University of Illinois Medical Center's monthly average for platelet donations is 30 to 45 units.

If you would like to donate (you must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good physical health) or for more information, contact Samantha DiMaggio, Blood Coordinator at the UI Medical Center, by e-mail at sdimaggi@uic.edu or by phone at (312) 996-1344.

Remember, blood is always in demand, and there is no substitute.
