For those who are trying to stay away from the overwhelming hustle and bustle of the downtown area, now would be a good time to check out some restaurants that local UIC area has to offer. No matter how picky the eater, there is something in the area that can meet each person's individual desires.

First there's Little Italy on Taylor Street, home to numerous great Italian restaurants. A few places worth stopping by are Al's No. 1 Beef at 1079 W. Taylor St., where they are known for their delicious Italian Beef sandwiches. If you go down further west you may want to stop by Pompeii at 1531 W. Taylor St. This is yet another student-friendly location, offering all different types of Italian cuisine, but at an affordable price. Not only is their food good, but they also carry numerous flavors of gelato, which is always a promising dessert.

If you venture north of the campus you will run into the Greektown area, where you can find a wide variety of Greek food. If you are looking for a quick bite to eat, both Mr. Greek and Greektown Gyros are open 24 hours and located on either side of Halsted and Jackson.

The next step up would be Venus at 820 W. Jackson, where they offer a Greek buffet on weekdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. which allows you to try a variety of different Greek foods without spending too much money. However if you are looking to spend a little bit more, Santorini is a little more expensive, but also offers a very large array of Greek dishes and they are especially known for their seafood.

On the south campus, there are constantly new restaurants showing up that deserve a visit. Lalo's Mexican Restaurant, known for their margaritas and delicious Mexican plates, is located at 733 W. Maxwell St. Right across the street at 730 W. Maxwell is Kohan, a Japanese Restaurant that puts their main emphasis on maki. They also have lunch specials on their sushi from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The new sports bar Junior's is also in the same area at 724 W. Maxwell St. They offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays and have 30 flat screen TVs scattered throughout the bar for sports fans that come out on game night.

Of course there is more to do around campus than just eat, but for the freshmen, what better way to get started on the freshman 15 than doing just that? Whether you have no job, no money, or have saved up a lot of money over the summer, there is a restaurant around UIC that is sure to satisfy your appetite and your wallet.
