Thanks to a $15 million donation from Allstate Insurance, the Chicago Children's Museum will move from Navy Pier to a new building in Grant Park, Mayor Richard Daley announced Wednesday.
The new museum, to be built at the northeast corner of Monroe Street and Columbus Drive, will have 100,000 square feet of floor space almost twice the amount of the current 57,000-square-foot facility.
"This is a tremendous location for the new museum within walking distance of Millennium Park, the Cultural Center, Symphony Center, the Art Institute, Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium," Daley said. "No other city in the world has such a concentration of cultural institutions in one location and now we'll have one more."
In recognition of the Allstate gift, the new facility will be named the Chicago Children's Museum at Allstate Place.
The insurance company is also donating $10 million to the Museum of Science and Industry on the city's South Side to finance a new basic science exhibit there, said Ed Liddy, chairman and chief executive officer of The Allstate Corporation.
