An All-American honor
His career at UIC may be over, but the accolades keep coming. A day after claiming All-Great Lakes Regional credit, senior striker Tonci Skroce was named a member of the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's NSCAA/adidas All-American Second Team. The award, one of the greatest honors in collegiate soccer, was granted to the Croatian-born captain just weeks after he was named the 2006 Horizon League Player of the Year. Skroce also owns five game-winning goals this season, helping the '06 Flames to win the Horizon League regular season title, grab the first NCAA at-large bid in school history and stay in the Top 25 national polls for 10 consecutive weeks. In his three-year career as a Flame, Skroce tabbed 19 goals and 10 assists in 54 games. Freshman Goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja joined Skroce with All-Great Lakes Region First Team accolades, while junior midfielders Pavle Dundjer and Cesar Zambrano earned All-Great Lakes Region Second Team honors.
Wildcats pounce on Flames
Despite freshman Cassie Johnson's career-high 16 points, UIC fell to Northwestern in Evanston last Wednesday 72-57. The Flames controlled momentum early, jumping out to a 17-6 lead halfway through the first half. However, the 'Cats would then go wild, answering with a dominating 25-3 run to push them to an eventual 34-24 halftime lead. UIC held tough in the opening minutes of the second half, but could not stop Northwestern from shooting 54.5 percent in the final 20 minutes. After concluding a three-game road swing against Northern Iowa and Wisconsin, the Flames will return to the Pavilion on Dec. 9 for a contest against Air Force to begin their longest home stand of the regular season.
