During winter break there's usually an abundance of lazy days and plentiful rest, which makes it difficult to get back into the swing of studying and completing routine college tasks. From waking up early to pulling all-nighters, energy is a crucial factor needed to complete both. One way to return to the hectic role of being a college student is to try having an energy drink for days when keeping alert is necessary.
In a study performed in England at the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, it was proven that functional energy drinks (FED) reduced sleepiness and sleep related driving accidents from continuous driving after a sleep-deprived night.
"I think energy drinks all taste horrible and are harmful to the body. But I do think there is an upside in consuming them because sometimes people need extra energy to stay up," said Zhu Tang, a third year finance major.
Many people are used to brands such as Red Bull, AMP, Bawls and Adrenaline Rush, but there are many other eye openers worth noticing.
National Beverage Corp. manufactures energy drinks such as RIP IT, Chic and Powerblast Powder. Developed in 2006, the unveiling of the new RIP IT drink was the company's big break into the energy drink market.
The drink is made of vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid, sodium, taurine, caffeine, inositol, guarana seed extract and contains about 11 to 12 milligrams per fluid ounce of caffeine, which is three more mg/fl oz than Red Bull. RIP IT can be purchased from Wal-Mart, Walgreen's, Target, Costco and Sam's Clubs nationwide.
Another new drink is the Steaz Energy drink, manufactured by Healthy Beverage Company, who are also makers of the popular Steaz Green Tea Soda. This drink is the first and only energy drink that is both organic and Fair Trade Certified.
Steaz Energy Drink is completely food based and contains no dietary supplements or herbal ingredients. Instead, it uses naturally caffeinated ingredients such as green tea, guarana, yerba mate and acai and is sweetened with organic pure cane juice. There is 80 mg of naturally occurring caffeine per can.
