February has been designated as Black History Month since 1926. Across the country, many cities will have various festivities designed to honor the many African Americans who have left their mark - and both the city of Chicago and UIC are holding several events in and around the area as part of the celebration.

The Chicago Park District is host of several events throughout various city parks. Most are located south of the UIC campus and the surrounding neighborhoods, they are accessible through public transportation. Locally, Union Park will have a Black History Month Celebration from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Feb. 2. The event will have music, entertainment including a wide variety of performances. For a complete list of the events and their locations visit the Chicago Park District website (www.chicagoparkdistrict.com).

Here is a list of events UIC will host throughout the month. The various events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For those events that have a fee, tickets are sold 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the first floor service center, Student Center East located at 750 S. Halsted Street. Tickets can also be purchased at the first floor information center, Student Center West located at 828 S. Wolcott Ave. Cash, MasterCard and Visa accepted. For more information, call (312) 413-5070.
