The Blackstone Hotel returns
The former Blackstone Hotel located at 636 South Michigan Avenue will undergo a $118 million renovation. The Blackstone, as it will be called, will be a luxury hotel under the Renaissance hotel brand. The 332-room hotel is expected to have 12 suites as well as all the amenities expected of a luxury hotel. The renovations are expected to be completed early this year, with no word yet on an exact date.
Fed government helps neighborhood improve safety
The U.S. Department of Justice's office of Community Oriented Policing Services and the Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the Institute for Public Safety Partnerships with close to $1.2 million in grants. The IPSP will work with various community policing organization and UIC Police to improve campus safety and reduce gang activity, as well as stopping the production of methamphetamines. By targeting these three areas, the institute plans to make a major difference in the crime rate in the community.
Obama closer to the White House
Almost a year after Illinois Senator Barack Obama spoke at the UIC Pavilion to announce his bid for the Presidency, Obama is now one step closer. After a disappointing third place in last week's Florida primary, former Senator John Edwards dropped out of the race. Voters are waiting on whom Edwards will endorse and what affect it will have on Super Tuesday and beyond.
