Stroger Hospital fully accredited
After receiving a less-than-satisfactory label of "conditional" seven months ago, Cook County's John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital has now been granted a clean bill of health and full accreditation, as announced by Cook County Board President Todd Stroger Monday, Feb. 11. Stroger Hospital, located in the Illinois Medical District on the near West Side, has been serving as Cook County's main public hospital since its renovation in December 2002. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare announced the accredited status of Stroger Hospital on Feb. 1, after a surprise inspection the day before. Stroger noted that last May the hospital was issued citations for 16 violations of code, all of which have been rectified since then.
President of Mexico visits Chicago
Felipe Calderon, the Mexican President, paid a visit to Chicago on Tuesday as a part of his first United States tour since he was elected in 2006. Calderon and Gov. Blagojevich signed a partnership in order to strengthen the educational ties between Illinois and Mexico - which includes a visiting program for Mexican teachers. While some Little Village and Pilsen community members seen Calderon's visit as beneficial, others were not as thrilled - and even formed protests. Many Little Village community members feel that Calderon's visit is too late to be of any help, considerating the halted immigration reform debate in Congress. Alternatively, the Little Village Chamber of Commerce offered praise to Calderon for strengthening ties between Mexico and immigrants residing in Chicago.
