Williams named HL Track athlete of the week

UIC senior Terell Williams was named the Horizon League track and field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced last Wednesday.

Williams won the pole vault title and set a personal-best mark of 4.70m at the Dick Pond Invitational on February 9. He also placed third in the triple jump (13.28m) and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.60m.

His efforts in the pole vault and long jump moved him into second and third place, respectively, among league season highs.

This is the third time Williams has earned the honor in his career and the first of the season for the Flames.

Men's gymnastics claims first dual meet

The UIC men's gymnastics team posted its highest team score of the season and won its first dual meet of the year over conference rival William & Mary 336.450-327.500 at the UIC Physical Education Building on February 9.

UIC captains Nikolai Korepanov, Anthony May, and Andrew Stover, and freshman Neal Thompson all took home first place individual honors.

Thompson took home three event titles on the night winning the all-around (82.050), and capped season-high scores on the pommel horse (14.250) and parallel bars (14.800).

Korepanov took home his second consecutive still rings title of the season with an excellent performance that earned him the top spot scoring a 14.950.

May captured his first individual event title of the season with his vault performance, tallying a season-best score of 15.600.

Stover made his season debut after struggling with injuries to open the year. Stover captured his first event crown of the season with a 14.350 on high bar. He also picked up a second place performance on the pommel horse (13.700), floor exercise (14.200), and a third place showing on the still rings (14.250).

Other notables highlighting the evening included season-best scores by Alex Kadar on parallel bars (13.800), Marcus Bennett on floor exercise (13.300), and Ned Kamimura on still rings (13.450).

Swimming teams prepare for League Championships

The UIC swimming and diving teams head to Cleveland State University on Wednesday for the 2008 Horizon League men's and women's championships.

The women's team, led by senior sprint swimmer Andrea Giczewski, looks to improve upon last year's fourth place finish when the Flames hosted the league event.

Giczewski set school records in the 200 free (1:54.69) and the 100 free (51.91) on January 26 during the final home meet of her career.

Freshman distance swimmer Kelly Hashoian recorded the league's top time this season in the 1650 freestyle event (17:27.44) in November.

The men's team will be led by sophomore Cameron Seebeck and freshman Steve Yemm. Seebeck holds the team season-best in the 50 (21.29) and Yemm set the Flames' season best marks in the 100 backstroke (52.60) and 100 butterfly (50.64).
