Mahtab Shirani was arrested for threatening UIC via e-mail not 24 hours after the NIU tragedy.

UIC student Mahtab Shirani was arrested by the UIC police the morning of Friday, Feb. 15, after sending out an anonymous e-mail threat to a number of students through their school e-mail addresses. The 24-year-old fourth-year from Wheaton, Ill. was picked up and charged with disorderly conduct.

Shirani was put on emergency suspension, which is not generally implemented. Bill Burton of the UIC News Bureau said that due to the circumstances and severity of the situation, they decided to implement the suspension.

Shirani will undergo both criminal proceedings for the felony charges and the UIC judicial process to determine a suitable action for her offense. She underwent the criminal proceedings on Friday.

UIC students were caught off-guard by Shirani's e-mail threat, which was sent not even 24 hours after the shooting at NIU occurred.

One criminal justice said that the only reason Shirani did it was because she just wanted to get attention, yet the student felt it was upsetting that Shirani would use such a "tragic event" to call attention to herself.

An art and design student agreed; she noted how disrespectful and even immature the stunt was. She said, "Seriously, who does that?"

Other students proceeded to call Shirani a copycat.

"It was a cry for help," Shirani told to Brian Hudson of mysuburbanlife.com. She also said that she never intended to or could even hurt anyone.

On her Facebook page, Shirani was posting the numbers of the victims of the NIU shooting and wrote, "UIC Has Been Threatened for Shooting Also." That was posted around 8:40 p.m. - only a few hours after the email had been sent and after UIC notified the campus. Her Facebook page is now unable to be found.

Shirani, in her interview with Hudson, said that she was relieved that her troubles have been made clear to her family. While that may be the case, her troubles remain unclear and unresolved to some students still dealing with the emotions of the NIU shooting.

It sounds to me that this woman has psychological issues that could cause her to become a danger to herself and others. Since she has done this crime, they should check her out thoroughly. (Continued…)
