Police investigating the case of a 52-year-old Springfield man accused last month of trying to solicit sex from a 12-year-old boy say he once taught elementary school in Indiana and served a five-year prison sentence for child molestation there.
Court records show Thomas Thornburg was arrested for allegedly molesting at least two teens while teaching at a school near Elkhart, Ind., in the 1980s.
Thornburg was arrested on Valentine's Day in Springfield. Authorities say Thornburg thought he had arranged online to meet a boy at DuBois Elementary School, but the other person was actually a federal agent. He is charged with indecent solicitation of a child under the age of 13.
