Does size really matter? Can a girl get pregnant if she's on top? Can pregnancy occur during menstruation? Should a guy masturbate before a date? MythBusters have been here all year debunking stubborn college myths, and so we don't 'go out with a loaded gun,' this week we take on the most important subject of all; sex myths.
We begin with the biggest and most seductive sex-related myth of all time: does size really matter? To get a grip on this one, we present these statistics for a general idea of what people think. In a recent survey of 556 women ages 19-49, about a fifth of the women tested were very concerned with penis size, while over half were only somewhat concerned and the final quarter were not concerned at all ("Does penis size matter?" About.com).
First-year psychology major Emily Isberner explains, "I think it's true what they say, that it's not the size that matters, but how you use it." Why, then, are so many guys still unconvinced?
An internet-based survey of 52,031 heterosexual men and women found that while 85 percent of women were satisfied with their partner's penis size, only 55 percent of men were satisfied with their own penis size. Studies show that men usually feel that average is bigger than it is. Lifestyles condoms measured 300 college-aged men and found the average length to be 5.9 inches and average girth is five inches. Considering about 90 percent of the nerve endings in the vagina are within the first two to three inches, and the average depth is four inches, the guys need to let it go.
If I have sex while on my period can I still get pregnant? It is possible, but not very likely. According to obstetrician Robert Zurawin, "You'll usually ovulate on the 14th day. If your period lasts seven or eight days, by the time you finish menstruating you're only five or six days away from ovulating. If you consider that sperm can live in the fallopian tube for two or three days, then you have a narrow window in which you could get pregnant if you ovulated a little earlier than normal." Should a guy masturbate before a date? Though 20th Century Fox's "There's Something About Mary" espouses the benefits of doing so to keep a guy's mind off of sex and on the date, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, world-renowned sexpert, advises against it: it won't lessen a man's thoughts of sex during a date. Instead it will heighten them as the body is awakened to sexual activity.

Gravity, as an obstacle, is truly no match for the swimming prowess of a determined sperm. We UIC students can learn a lot from their example. Sperm are very dedicated and focused on success. They have a goal, and they are prepared to do what's necessary to achieve it; no matter how difficult the uphill climb. If sperm can do it, so can we.
