For the first time the annual UIC student research forum combined the undergraduate and graduate research presenters in the newly opened UIC Forum on Friday, Apr. 18. Students competed in three areas - Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Humanities/Social Sciences. Among the 90 graduates and professionals and the 60 undergraduate presenters there was a wide range of research topics in multiple science disciplines.
"We are gratified to see the scope and variety of subjects of the research forum," said Larry H. Danziger, Interim Vice Chancellor for Research of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The UIC undergraduate research forum is a student-organized event with the mission to inform the public and academic community of the importance of undergraduate research at UIC. The judging committee consists of volunteering faculty and alumni for each discipline, and the event is supported by multiple sponsors and fundraisers.
During the award ceremony, Dr. Mary Lou Bareither, faculty advisor of the Undergraduate Student Research Forum Steering Committee, praised the students for having raised $25,000 in support of the event.
"It's great - I really had no idea that we had raised that much," said Adolfo Luna, member of the committee.
"It really isn't us, it's really the students that make it all worthwhile, so thank you students," said Brenda Russell, executive associate vice chancellor for research in a speech at the ceremony.
The students also received recognition for the design of the router and the t-shirts handed out at the forum.
Lon Kaufman, vice provost for undergraduate studies and the dean of the Honors College, announced and presented the awards.
The graduate and professional forum offered the UIC award for Graduate Research in the Environmental and Peace category. This year's winner was David Ramsey for his research and intervention strategy of the treatment of eye disease in a rural province of the Philippines.
