Stover advances to NCAA Finals
UIC gymnast Andrew Stover closed out his sophomore year in stellar fashion at the 2008 National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics all-around finals on Apr. 18.
The co-captain finished 11th overall in the all-around competition with a final score of 82.95. He was UIC's lone finals qualifier.
Stover managed to match his season-best score on the vault with a 15.20. He also earned his highest individual finish on the high bar, placing 26th with a final tally of 14.25.
This marked Stover's first NCAA all-around finals appearance in his career.
Basketball signs another Public League star
The UIC basketball program officially netted another recruit last week, the program announced last Wednesday. DeMarkus Isom-Jones, a 6'5" swingman from Chicago's Engelwood High School signed his National Letter of Intent last week.
Isom-Jones averaged 24 points and eight rebounds per game last season for the 2A state sectional finalist Eagles.
Isom-Jones becomes the second public league player, and third Chicago-based recruit signed by the UIC coaching staff this year, joining John Hope College Prep 6'1" guard Zavion Neely and Harmony Community School of Cincinnati 6'7" forward Jelani Poston on the UIC roster.
Softball no-hit at DePaul
The UIC softball team fell to No. 23 DePaul, 5-0, on a rainy afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium in Lincoln Park.
Blue Demon pitcher Becca Heteniak (21-6) tossed a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
UIC pitcher Carly DeMarco falls to 3-5 in the circle. The freshman totaled one strikeout in two innings of work. Whitney Orellana replaced DeMarco in the bottom of the third inning.
DePaul took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on three-run home run to centerfield from Sandy Vojik.
Vojik tacked on a run in the bottom of the third inning on a solo shot to right field.
With runners on first and third in the fourth, Amber Patton stole second and Vojik stole home to give the Blue Demons a 5-0 advantage.
UIC gets a chance to avenge the loss this Wednesday at Flames Field. The Red-out rematch begins at 6 p.m.
Baseball falls to Central Michigan
Central Michigan's six-run inning to open Wednesday's game dug the UIC baseball team into an early hole, and the Flames' rally effort came up short in a 7-5 defeat at Les Miller Field.
Five of the first six hitters singled for the Chippewas (21-18) in the top of the first, giving the visitors a quick 3-0 lead. After an RBI groundout put starter Grant Kohlstaedt one out away from escaping further damage, Dale Cornstubble hit a two-run homer that stayed just inside the foul pole in left.
After allowing seven hits in the first two innings, UIC pitchers didn't give up another base hit until the ninth.
The Flames would not go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the seventh to make it a 7-5 game.
Brandon Harwell led off with a walk, and Steve McGuiggan doubled to left center to put two men in scoring position that eventually came home on Jake Carr's ground-rule double.
Carr came home two batters later after second baseman Brendan Emmett misplayed Coddington's sharp grounder and subsequently threw the ball past the first baseman to commit two costly errors on the same play.
But that's all the offense UIC could muster. The Flames stranded a total of 10 runners, including six left on base in scoring position.
