One fine day in 1988, The Chicago Flame ignited for the first time and began its blaze in the UIC community. Here we pay homage to the past 20 years and travel back in time to see how life and the campus were like when the flame was first lit.
Nearly a generation ago, our parents and undergrads at UIC were wearing fashion of a qub>estionable nature. In the late 1980s, both men and women channeled their inner rockers like the guys from the group Poison and wore acid-wash jeans, large ripped jeans that were a little loose on the body.
In 2008, guys and gals wear fitted, cleaner looking denim in multiple shades, even solid colors. Some fashion experts predict that this summer will be the return of the distressed jean, especially for women, as seen on several famous faces like Jessica Simpson. This look is especially catered to the younger, college age set, since some students like to wear whatever they find on the floor of the dorm room anyway.
Next is the Hawaiian shirt, worn especially by men who wanted to look "leisurely." They came in an abundance of colors and patterns and if you look real hard when on vacation, you just might see one still. It's perfectly fine for guys to wear colors now, guys should not be afraid to wear pastels and bold colors, but leave the Aloha state alone.
Making its presence known in pop fashion is the 80's themed t-shirt with styles that remind you of your favorite shows like Transformers, G.I. Joe and yes, Jem. Ladies can be colorful too in tights. Tights or leggings have been around for some time now, but ones with hues are definitely in this year as they were 20 years ago (thanks Jem).
The year 1988 brought us hits from Michael Jackson's "Bad" album with the single "Smooth Criminal" out that year. People were influenced by MJ's leather jackets and the big and punk style ala "The Lost Boys" even though the movie premiered in 1987. This summer, boyfriend blazers are in for high style fashionistas and trenches for men and women who want to adorn themselves with a posh and polished look.
1988 brought us hits from Billy Idol, the popular hard rock singer who wore fingerless gloves, which later became a fad among rock fans. Gloves have not necessarily made their comeback, but only on other musical artists like Rihanna in her unique interpretation of punk cuteness. Ladies today don't have to wear gloves; small clutches and a nice manicure make hands look great this summer.
