Secretary of State worker accepted bribes
Issue date: 5/5/08 Section: News Briefs
An employee of the secretary of state's office is accused of accepting bribes to provide personal information on car owners and to help a convicted con artist obtain false vehicle titles.
Secretary of state spokesman Dave Druker says a joint investigation by the U.S. Secret Service and secretary of state police led to 46-year-old Yvette Beler of Springfield. Beler faces federal charges because she allegedly used the U.S. mail to carry out the scheme.
According to court documents, an unidentified confidential informant told a Secret Service agent in February that he had met Beler a couple of years ago when he applied for a vanity plate. He eventually started asking Beler for information in exchange for money.
Beler was arrested Wednesday and released on her own recognizance. She is to appear in federal court in Chicago on Friday.
