The Taste of UIC featured delicious cuisine from a variety of cultures, as represented through twenty student organizations at UIC.

UIC Campus Programs hosted its bi-annual Taste of UIC at the East Terrace in Student Center East on Wednesday, September 17. Open to all student organizations interested in fundraising, the Taste of UIC is limited to twenty participating clubs that vary from ethnic-based groups to academic-based groups, and everything in-between. This event has been a UIC tradition for well over fifteen years. Mike Crehan, one of the key coordinators of the event, sifts from station to station, maintaining order and answering questions in the crowded East Terrace.

"It's one of the best events we do; it's jam-packed from start to finish," commented Crehan on the success of the event.

Even at a quarter to 2, students were still filing into the entrance to purchase tickets to sample the schmorgesbord prepared by student organizations. Aside from fundraising, interest groups can use the event as an opportunity to establish themselves on the campus scene.

Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha is an interest group taking advantage of such an opportunity. An interest groups wishing to establish itself as a sorority must meet the one-year requirement of being an interest group which entails contributing to the community in a variety of ways. Ofelia Contreras (Jr) says ILLTA participates in community service, Walk for Aids, Walk for Breast Cancer, and high school workshops.

A new organization, the Persian Cultural Association, participated in the Taste of UIC for the first time on Wednesday. The non-political, non-religious association is a means for other Persians to unite under the belief that what is shown on the news is not an accurate portrayal of ethnic Persians. Areazue Hosseini (Fr) says the association is specifically not named the Iranian Cultural Association in order to distinguish between Persian ethnicity and the post-Cultural Revolution of Iran in 1979. The PCA served a selection of homemade Persian foods, including pita bread.

Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, an Asian interest sorority, has participated in Taste of UIC off and on in past years. Joyce Wong (Jr) says it is a great way to get their name out there. The event is not limited to ethnic-oriented groups as evidenced by the Student Association of Medical Artists' presence.

On average, organizations raise approximately $200 each. The Taste of UIC is a chance for any student organization to promote itself to the student body, and for students to celebrate diversity in the best way possible: through food.
